Chocolate Cobweb (Library of Crime Classics Series)Charlotte Armstrong is undoubtedly one of the best mystery writers around. Her character MacDuff is great! Once you read one of her books you will be hooked.
I got it at a used bookstore years ago . I read it and loved it . I have it and Lay On Macduff , the first book in the series . I wish she had written more on this series .
Charlotte Armstrong wrote some excellent books, intriguing, fast-moving, entertaining, page-turning. THIS novel is NOT one of them. It starts out relatively intriguingly, but then meanders aimlessly for the middle 3/5ths of the book. Nothing happens, our main character generates a lot of angst over what seems inconsequential and moribund. There are a few surprises when the mystery is finally explained and unraveled in the last act. But this is one of those mystery novels which could have been told in considerably less than half the length of what is not a particularly long book.
I honestly think that if I had started with this Charlotte Armstrong, I would have never bothered to read another one -- which would have been unfortunate becuase I've tremendously enjoyed several of her novels. But I can't really give this one any kind of recommendation -- avoid it! It's a surprisingly dull book from a customarily interesting author...
I own a lot of Charlotte Armstrong's work in paperback, but there are a few I had not read. Some of her writing is obviously rooted in her time and quite dated now, but many concepts are timeless, love of a mother for her children, for one. Mac Duff is a great character, his instincts for people are strong and interesting. If you haven't read her books already, I envy you the wonderful experience you have in store.
One of Armstrong's best. Charlotte Armstrong is a master storyteller, but some of her books are perennials and some aren't. This one is definitely one of the ones I go to for comfort food! A bypasser gets co-opted to help when a woman has died from poison and a mother must go to the hospital with her sick child, leaving 5 children on their own. (It's a different age--this was written during WWII.) Mystery gets solved and lives changed. Wasn't wild about the two other books featuring MacDougal Duff, but this one if wonderful.
